The Return of Dani Phantom by R.tistiC

an_older_dani_phantom_by_r_tistic-d4k0k3j

Premise
So picture this, two years after Phantom Planet, the series Grand Finale. Danny Phantom is still the Hero of World though a few organizations like Guys in White seem him as threat. Also Danielle been on her own all this time until she comes back to Amity Park.
Going through the motions a bit, it starts with her getting hit by a device that makes her lose her powers until she slowly regains with help from one of Danny’s Ghost Zone allies. Then its kind of a mini mystery to find out where is Amity Park’s hero and why the town is overrun with ghosts.

What I like about it
There a lot I like about it personally, first you should know that I like Dani Phantom, part of me reading this because I wish she had more than two episodes (and a brief cameo at the end). I tend to have a tendency to like underutilized characters with a lot of potential and Dani fits that bill.
Now here’s where I do my best not to spoil the story via moments (Sure the story is 8 years old but I only found it two years ago and I want new readers for this story):

-While the Ghosts are still fought, the few non-ghosts in the Rogues Gallery seem to be the major antagonists and drive the drama, making it pretty different in that regard.
-Danny’s improvement with his powers ( Duplication, Ice powers)
-The divergence given to Dani’s powers. It goes to show how much the author notices things about the characters like how Danielle can do ghost ray kicks unlike Danny. ( In the comments you can say whether or not, but I can’t recall Danny using energy kicks). And this borders on spoiler territory but as an extension to this, Danielle comes up with her own super move, kinda her unique counterpart to Danny’s Ghostly Wail that think really fits her.

-How it addresses one of dangling plot lines scrapped in the final season (i.e. that the Fentons were planned to adopt Danielle). And just seeing how she feels about each of the Fenton’s is great too.

Dislike/Could have improved

There’s not much I dislike and I’m not going to get too emotional over an 8 year old story where the writer has gotten better. Its mostly just nitpicks to show what not to do when writing or a matter of personal taste.
-The 2 year timeskip in that overall it doesn’t seem to necessary, that is the story would be almost the same without it. Though the author admits that it so certain characters don’t recognize Danielle at first so I don’t have a real problem with it.
-I’m mixed on the ending but I doesn’t ruin the story for me and it does end on a good (but unexpected note) I can talk about it more in the comments to people who read the story if they want since I’m trying not to spoil.
-So I had to address the touchy subject on describing about certain characters. Let me make it clear, I don’t have a problem with saying a character is African American, its just weird it being brought up when nobody else’s background is brought up. I know its to let people new to the Phandom or forgot what the look like have an idea but yeah. My solution would be to simply replace “African-American” with dark or brown skin, short, sweet and fixes my real issue, keeping the flow of the story without being too distracting.

Conclusion

So as one of the first Danny Phantom I fics, about a character that never got explored as well as she could of you bet this one is one of my favorites. This one gets my special rating of Must Read, especially if you are Danny Phantom fan with an appreciation for Dani Phantom and her bond with Danny and wanted her arc materialized in some form.

Should note there is a sequel but I might review that sometime in the future. Until then, wait for the next Cartoon Fanwork recommend. Don’t be afraid to comment or request some (good) ones!

Kanya the Homin

Kanya Homin

So here is a picture of my character, Kanya. She is a humanoid alien known as a homin, who typically live in forested areas on the planet, Kaf.  In particular is a tropic homin, an ethnotype typically found in the tropical rainforest and their signature combo of frizzy hair and epicanthic eye folds.  This time I added a background similar to her home village so I don’t always keep my characters in blank white space, I hope it becomes a trend as it looks nice to me. Let me know what you think!

The Beauty of Flaws

For those who don’t know, I enjoy a Cartoon Network show known as Steven Universe.

Actually enjoy is an understatement but instead of fan gushing, let me get straight to the point of my post. A recent episode ” Historical Friction” the main character Steven learns from his friend Jamie why having a character in a play that is perfect and never struggles is ultimately boring. He later goes on to share this with one of his foster mothers, Pearl and how satisfying it is when a character who makes mistakes keeps trying and doesn’t give up until they reach their goal. (Which resonates with her especially since the show had a week of episodes revolving around a story arc where Pearl angered her friend Garnet by lying to spend more time with her.)

Something I took from this was making a list of my personal flaws that could come up via personal reflection and comments from people close to me. It’s tough exposing your hang ups especially on the internet but here they are:

  • Unrelentingly push side in argument past point of interest
  • Try too hard to yield to other side if other side is close to me
  • Prone to procrastination
  • Inconsiderate of other side in argument
  • Bad at keeping touch with friends I don’t see everyday or long distance
  • Rather find personal hobbies or entertainment than seeking a possibly good time with others
  • React to criticism of habits/character with excuses or sarcasm, constructive or otherwise
  • Reluctance to changing routine despite bouts of longing for participating in things with others

Sometime next week, I will post the opposite, my strengths that I think makes me great. (Something else an episode of this show touches upon).

Homin Appearance

So since my species Homins have been getting a bit popular, I though know would be a great time to show off their general appearance in art. (The censored though the uncensored one isn’t very graphic or detailed but just in case.)

As you can see they resemble humans in many ways but diverged a bit from our ancestor’s terrestrial lifestyle to an arboreal one accordingly.

Vanessa Fly Trap Comics: Get Out There

This week is the first Vanessa Fly Trap Comic I did, “Get Out There”. I made it with the intent of establishing the relationship between Vanessa and her brother Victor. Victor doesn’t like particularly like other people and certainly doesn’t go out of his way to accommodate them or go out to meet them. He would much rather spend his time at home reading books, browsing the web, or working on an invention. His sister is basically the polar opposite and is constantly trying to get him outside and bring him along when she goes to see her friends. This comic plays with that particular dynamic show how each sibling tries to work with the other, Enjoy!

Vanessa Fly Trap Characters: Elizabeth Scout

Elizabeth is the mother of Tony and Kate Scout and the adoptive mother of Vanessa and Victor Sprout.

Appearance

Elizabeth Portrait

Elizabeth has dark brown eyes which match her medium brown complexion. She also has wavy black hair that reaches past her shoulders. She typically wears an outfit consisting of blue jeans and a pink top with the female symbol in the front. She is usually seen sporting her burgundy flower earrings.

Background
Elizabeth was born in the U.S.A. to two Jamaican parents. As such she is fluent in American English and Jamaican patios (especially when she is angry). She was the youngest, with an older sister and brother.
She met her future husband in her senior year of high school, and he decided to go to her college. There she also met Vanessa’s mother and became good friends with her. After having two children of her own, Elizabeth adopted Vanessa and Victor when their parents where no longer able.

Personality

Elizabeth is an optimist in her own abilities and maintain a high opinion about herself. Being goal-oriented, she has confidence and drive but may be condescending or use a forceful approach (like dogged persistence) to get what she wants. When things go different than expected, she tends to over-analyze the decisions that need to be made. This can make her appear indecisive while she takes her time, sorting through the various outcomes she considers. As such, she is not a quick decision-maker, and can become flustered when things happen too swiftly, and doesn’t like surprises very much. However she is known for taking decisions on a whim sometimes, and she is rather stubborn once she has made up her mind about something.

She can have trouble admitting she is wrong, but will eventually confide advice from other sources like her husband. Also no matter the goal or roles she strives for, she keeps her priorities in check, like making sure to make time for her family.

Her parenting style is generally authoritative, and she is the one who most often establishes the rules and guidelines that her children are expected to follow. When Tony and Kate were toddlers, she was more authoritarian and punished them when they misbehaved. Georges influence however shifted her to explain the reasoning behind her discipline and be more responsive to her children. However she lets them know she’s serious when she raises her voice.

Vanessa Fly Trap Characters: Kate Scout

Kate Scout is the 8-year old sister of Tony Scout and adoptive step-sister to Vanessa and Victor Sprout.

 photo KateBioPic_zpsa56feba1.png

!Appearance
Kate is a young averaged sized eight-year old girl. She has light brown colored eyes and a fairly light complexion. She has frizzy dark brown hair that is usually coiled into a soft curly Afro with a hairband, although her hair can also become naturally wavy with typical shampoo. Her favorite outfit is a dark and light purple shirt with a pink butterfly in the front and jeans, paired with pink laced white sneakers. She also has two small yellow earrings.

!Background
She is biracial black and white, with both Jamaican and Haitian heritage. Although American English is her go to language,  she can also speak conversational Jamaican patois and Haitian creole.

!Personality

Around those that she is familiar with, she is very chatty. With friends and family, she is basically a motor mouth who can talk exceptionally fast. In fact, she can talk faster than most people while still saying the words properly.

However she doesn’t like to offend others (except for Tony) and hates the idea of being on someone’s bad side. As such she might seem like a completely different person around unfamiliar and professional looking adults. When expected to keep up a conversation with them, it might be hard for her or take a while to say something. She is quiet around new people, and more also more adept to listening.

Kate has a liking towards music, often humming notes and is easily touched by music. She tends to pick up on the moods of songs, like high tempo dance songs or slow love ballads. A lot of this has to do with the fact that she really gets into the feelings of a song. The more passionate the singer of a song is, the more she gets into it when she sings the lyrics. Because of this, she sometimes can change her mood with her favorite songs. Her appreciation and enthusiasm for music is what led to hear to play and practice the violin.

Likes: Beef patties, Listening to music: Pop, Electropop, Dancehall, Love Songs, Cooking like her mother, speaking Haitian Creole to her father

Dislikes: Vegetables not prepared by her parents, Talking to new adults, bugs, Seeing the fly traps eat bugs, Gangsta Rap

Hobbies: Playing the violin, Singing, Talking to her best friend Meiying

Mother: Elizabeth Scout
Father:Georges Scout
Her brother is Tony and her adopted siblings are Vanessa and Victor.

Best: Meiying ”Amber

  • Vanessa
  • Sam
  • Dlyan
  • Hina’ea

!Skills

  • She was taught by her mother since she was five how to use a stove and oven, as well as properly chop vegetables without cutting herself.
  • Another interesting skill is that she can mimic many voices that she hears, especially those around her the most. This includes her parents, friends and siblings although her voice will get tired after excessive use, especially for male voices.
  •  She can play the violin, and was inspired to learn it after hearing “the best song I didn’t understand”
  • She can speak conversational Jamaican patios. She also can also say Haitian Creole phrases and likes to say them to her father who praises her for speaking the language.
